"The sun, with all those planets revolving around it and dependent on it, can still ripen a bunch of grapes as if it had nothing else in the universe to do." – Galileo Galilei
3/15/17:
I'm back from our wine-tasting trip, with beautiful memories and lots of photos.

It was warm and sunny in Sonoma County last weekend. Trees were covered in little pink flowers, the grass was bright green, and both wild fields and cultivated landscapes had a variety of blooms to enjoy.

I find it enlightening to study the terrain in areas other than our central coast, observing similarities and differences in what grows well. The area around Healdsburg and Geyserville that we visited was a place of gentle hills and verdant forests dappled in sunbeams. The region seems to be fully into spring. Here in Santa Cruz I'm still waiting for tulips to bloom and for the nights to not be so chilly before I plant most crops.
These six photos were taken at Ferrari-Carano Winery's gardens. Clicking on the small images below will bring up a larger version.

On the way back home from wine country, we spent a day at the Oakland Zoo. While they don't have a full arboretum as some zoos do, there were exotic plants and trees to look at (as well as the wonderful animals of course). After the zoo trip we attended a concert by the Red Hot Chili Peppers at Oakland Coliseum, and arrived back in Santa Cruz very late Sunday night.

After waking up slowly on Monday, I was grateful that we had decided to take the day off from work. So much yardwork needed to be done before our landlady visits on the 19th! Steve and I managed to complete most of it. There is definite satisfaction in seeing my garden, the lawn and pathways looking spiffy, while knowing that once spring is in full swing, our yard will have the additional appeal of many colorful flowers.
