Celebration. 03/25/03

March 15th is "The Ides of March", and it was the day Matt and Jessica got married.

It was a long, fun day, spent with many of our favorite people: First the wedding, held in an Art-Deco style movie theater, followed by lunch at a Mexican restaurant, then hanging out with friends (including the newly married couple) at a local bar/dance club, then sobering up late at night at a greasy spoon diner.

I wore a long sleeveless dress of bright spring green. The color of excited chameleons, of new leaves in bright sunlight. Matt made each of the groomsmen, including Steve, wear a FEZ. Nobody is sure why, but they had fun with it.

It was an informal and non-traditional wedding in many good ways. The reception was first, then a movie (the Princess Bride) shown after the reception and right before the short ceremony, which was performed by a good friend of the groom instead of some stuffy religious figure. The bride's dress was very simple, sort of 1930's evening-gownish. Sleeveless, draped in front, with a narrow skirt, worn with a long string of pearls and a very long veil. It was cool to see Steve and 5 of the other guys dressed in the groomsmen's tuxedos, we took lots of pictures of them looking very sharp. I got a great picture of Matt and Jessica at the "now you may kiss the bride" moment.

I doubt I will ever get married myself. But I want to always be with Steve. It’s quite okay that only the two of us know the depth of our commitment to always being together, which is stronger than that of quite a few married couples.

Our newly married friends seem to have a promising start on being the "happily ever after" types as well. It rained the day before the wedding and the day after, but the Ides of March itself was a perfect sunny spring day. I think this is a good sign.
