Ghetto Gardening 2015
"A garden is a grand teacher. It teaches patience and careful watchfulness; it teaches industry and thrift." – Getrude Jekyll, Horticulturist
08/11/15:
I've started a board on Pinterest of gardening ideas to consider. The first one I'm trying, on one of the hardier rosebushes, is a coffee spray to repel insects/snails and give plants a bit of nitrogen. This is easier to prepare than the garlic juice concoction, so hopefully it's effective. Another source of information I'm exploring is a "daily paper" of articles: Annie Haven's Container Gardening. I've also been following more garden writers on Twitter, and began compiling a list there.
The representation of my yard that I made last week is missing information on what some of the plants actually are. So I downloaded the free GrowIt app to help out with identification.
In my search for larger containers to transplant tomato plants, herb seedlings and morning glories, I found a coconut fiber planter at Grocery Outlet for only $3.99! They have hanging baskets, trellises and large bags of potting soil also. Recent expeditions to thrift stores have turned up buckets, metal boxes and plastic containers for 50¢ to $2 apiece. Most of these I managed to put holes in the bottom for drainage, but not the metal ones. They'll have to be watched carefully to ensure they aren't getting over-watered or heating up too much in the sun. It has been over 80 degrees in the afternoon these days.
Aphids begone!
Sweet find: Coconut fiber planter.
Fun "ghetto" containers.
