Halloween in the City. 11/08/02

For Halloween this year I was Axl Rose and Steve was Jesus (Buddy Christ from the movie Dogma). We went up to the City to Pat’s house then took the Metro to Castro St. where the entire area, about 3 blocks, maybe? is a sea of people in costume. We all had a great time, especially Jesus, who got a lot of attention. Our friends were dressed as Silent Bob, Hunter S. Thompson, and The Fly.

Most other years we have wandered around our own downtown Halloween celebration which is similar, not quite as large or crazy. One year our only transportation was the motorcycle, and I remember riding on the back of the bike dressed in my black catsuit, wearing cat-ears on my head, my long cat-tail streaming behind me as we zoomed downtown in the first rainstorm of the year. Everything was wet, black, shiny.

For my Axl Rose costume I got a leather motorcycle jacket at Goodwill. It is surprisingly comfortable and fits flatteringly; I think this is going to be an important part of my wardrobe this winter. The red bandanna, pointy western boots and chains are definitely never going to be worn again, however.

Now that holiday is past, and the dreading of Thanksgiving and Christmas have set in. Still Halloween candy all over the place. I am trying not to eat all of it. It was only earlier this year that I realized I dread Christmas. Somehow it has become a list of chores, a time of being broke from too much shopping, and of uncomfortable family gatherings. Every year I manage to cut back on the amount of spending and projects but still it is overwhelming. I guess I live for the beautiful happy parts of it, telling myself that those moments of joy are worth all the hassles.

This Saturday night there is a party to go to, at a house where many cats live. I am bringing tropical fruit juice and Malibu Rum, and cat treats. Don't know if we're up to anything tonight(Friday), would be nice to get out but also I have not had a chance to really burrow and hibernate in the bed, or take a long hot bubble bath. I have never understood people who get up early in the morning and shower. To have little drops of water falling on my head and all over me, instead of being immersed in warmth, my head sticking out of the water, my paws holding a book. Why?

The rain falling outside right now is what brings nasty memories of having to take showers to mind. Luckily I have not had much of it land on my head, umbrellas are wonderful. This morning Bailey cat was yowling at me to open the window so he could go outside, even though it was pouring. Finally I let him out the front door, ten minutes later he was still sitting on the front porch, giving me reproachful looks. "Make it stop already!!" he says. "I can't just sit here in this little dry spot, looking out at my turf. I've gotta go prowl! Make sure the black cat stays away from MY yard! I gotta run across the street. And beg for food from the neighbors! Stupid rain!!"
